Speaking into the abyss

I’ve recently come to realize how unsatisfying it is to meet band members. I long to be a part of the lives they all lead. I don’t want to be with the band, rather I’d like to be in the band. I based so much of my happiness on meeting members and I must admit I’ve met my share of them. I suppose I’m more jealous of them than anything. They create and we listen. It would be incredible to have someone enjoy something that I created. I will admit though, talking to GIVERS was life changing. They are all so down to earth and it made me want even more to go through what they do.

I’m now at a loss.

In the immortal words of Julian Casablancas, I’ve got nothing to say.

TUMBLR WORLD WHAT UP I’M BACK

it’s been ages.

First I have to say that Givers is the greatest band with the coolest people. I saw them at Crescent Ballroom on Monday with Grouplove and Hannah Hooper took my pic with all of them. They are too great.

TLATR and the new era of teens in Phoenix

If you haven’t listened to Taylor Locke and the Roughs, you should. Taylor Locke, from the band Rooney, combines hard rock with a little bit of ELO and a dash of alternative. I went to their concert here a few weeks ago and was astonished by the fact that so few people showed up. This $8 concert should have been packed. These gents have supreme talent, especially drummer Joe Seiders. Thankfully though, the lack of people gave me a chance to go backstage and hang out with them before the show. The main thing I want you to take away from this portion of the post is that TLATR is a band who’s music should be listened to right now by you.

As far as the new era of teens in Phoenix goes, I have decided to start blogging about different events that go on in downtown Phoenix. Events that should not be missed. The main thing I will focus on is the under 21 aspect. The fact is that there are thousands of things to do downtown on a friday night, but how many of those events are under 21? My goal is to show teens that there are many hip/cool/mod/retro/rad things to do and places to go here in the downtown Phoenix area.

Voxhaul Broadcast, Ocean Grove, and Robert Schwartzman @ Hard Rock Cafe Phoenix-Concert Review. 10/25/11

It was definitely a spur of the moment decision when I went to see these bands perform. I left 30 minutes before the concert started which was surprising since I usually like to get to the venue at least an hour early. I arrived a bit late and Robert Schwartzman was already performing. I bought my ticket and went inside, surprised to see only 3 people dancing at the stage area. The other 20 people were sitting at tables enjoying the music. This was quite an astonishment since the week before I went to an almost sold out Chromeo show where everyone was dancing and going wild. Even with a smaller and slightly unresponsive crowd, Robert Schwartzman gave his performance everything he had. I must admit that he has improved quite a bit since I last saw him in November. After his set Ocean Grove started setting up. During this time I noticed that some people from the audience went up to the stage and started helping. It was then that I realized how chill of a concert this was going to be, considering that many band members were sitting with the audience watching each other perform. I had never really listened to Ocean Grove before but their music is quite captivating! They also gave a great performance that involved alot of talking to the audience, which is always a good thing. While Voxhaul Broadcast was setting up for their set, I went back to see Robert Schwartzman, since he was by the merch table. During Ocean Grove’s performance i tweeted him about making an appearance, and he replied saying that he just yelled, and that was his appearance. I talked to him about that, gave him a 6 second long hug, and asked if he could sign a card for me. He asked if i would rather have a signed copy of the cd and i said “Of course!” so he gave me a copy of his new cd “Double Capricorn” for free!! Then I told him I loved him and he gave me another hug. By this time Voxhaul Broadcast had already started performing. I went up and joined 3 other people at the stage area and swayed while David Dennis screamed at the top of his lungs. This wasn’t just a stage scream, this was a pitched scream. Is it weird to say that I was extremely impressed by the fact that his screams were on key? I mean they were. He and the rest of his band mates definitely rocked out, and during the last song Dennis even knocked over his mic stand. The concert was amazing, and I drove home with an exhilarated feeling. Sometimes spur of the moment decisions are the best decisions.

Stupefying moments: Along with RSchwartz, I also met John Lloyd Taylor, Ocean Grove’s lead singer. He was extremely nice and I hope to see him and his band again someday soon.

Not so stupefying moments: Garbo, bassist of Ocean Grove Band, was standing in the corner with the rest of his band mates. If you don’t know what he looks like, let’s just say that he could be in a movie alongside Ryan Reynolds and not be downplayed at all in his looks. Anyway, I was hoping to meet him too but I didn’t want to miss Voxhaul Broadcast’s set, so I waited until they finished. Of course he left right after it was over though.
